At least 41 people have died in Indonesia, as a result of a fire that broke out in a prison on the outskirts of the capital, Jakarta. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning at the Tangerang prison, when most of the inmates were asleep.
Dozens more are said to have been injured. A short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire, but authorities said this had not yet been confirmed and would be further investigated.
Only 15 guards were on duty for the entire building, which housed 2,000 inmates – a number higher than its intended capacity of 600. Prison overcapacity is a persistent problem in Indonesian prisons.
