The family of an elderly woman are demanding justice after the grandmother died from horrific injuries she received in hospital at the hands of a nurse. The nurse inflicted such large wounds on his body and face that it was difficult to recognize him.

Carol Smith, 77, died after suffering a broken nose and jaw, a fractured skull and a massive bleed on the brain and an inquest has been opened into the matter.

Daughter Jennifer Shannon, 50, said mum Carol was hospitalized after collapsing at home but was fine, sitting up in bed and not seriously injured.

Jennifer claims she received a call the next day saying her mother had been injured after an altercation with a nurse. She was horrified when she arrived at the hospital and saw her mother covered in scars on her face and swollen.

Carol suffered a brain bleed and died. The Bristol County District Attorney is investigating the incident at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts, USA.

Jennifer said: "I was in shock and horror at how catastrophic her injuries were. She had a broken nose, the entire right side of her face and jaw were broken, as well as multiple fractures to her head. The doctor told me that she got into a fight with a nurse and when she tried to hit the nurse she fell down. How did he fall and break multiple parts of his face and head?"

Mum-of-four Carol was taken to hospital by ambulance after falling inside her home on July 30.

She was the victim of a violent attack in 2009 and suffered a head injury that left her unsteady and prone to falls.

Daughter Jennifer and granddaughter Makayla, 14, went to visit Carol on Aug. 1 and said she had no visible injuries. But the next day, she received a devastating phone call.

"My mom was crying and I asked what happened to my mom? I turned to the woman standing there, a member of staff and my mum said "don't talk to her she will kill you, look what she did to me, she beat me". Jennifer expressed .

The Bristol County District Attorney confirmed the investigation is still ongoing and they have no further comment to make at this time. /tvklan.al
