Cause of death of Reiner couple revealed, killer son appears in court for the first time

Renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, died from "multiple blunt force trauma injuries," a medical examiner has confirmed. The couple's manner of death has been officially classified as a homicide, according to authorities.

The results of the autopsy were released just hours after their son, Nick Reiner, made his first court appearance following the tragic deaths of his parents. Nick Reiner's defense attorney, Alan Jackson, told reporters outside the Los Angeles courthouse that the next hearing is set for January 7, 2026. He called the incident a "deep tragedy" for the Reiner family, noting that the case involves "very complex and serious issues."

“We ask that the process move forward without rushing to judgment and without drawing premature conclusions, but with restraint, dignity and respect for the justice system and for the family,” Jackson said. The 32-year-old is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, accompanied by a special aggravating circumstance. Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found dead in their villa last Sunday.

That same day, authorities arrested Nick Reiner as the main suspect in the crime. Under the law, the penalty for first-degree murder is life in prison, up to the death penalty. Authorities have said that any potential decision regarding capital punishment will be discussed with the family in advance.
