Ireland, the European headquarters of Facebook, has fined WhatsApp 225 million euros for violating EU data privacy laws.
The result of an investigation launched in December 2018, the sanction originally imposed by Ireland was revised upward at the request of European regulatory bodies. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) is primarily responsible for overseeing compliance with the EU Charter of Data Rights GDPR.
The messaging app wouldn't have "fulfilled its obligations of transparency” regarding communication with users about data usage.
"We disagree with today's decision about the transparency we provided people in 2018 and the penalties are completely disproportionate. We will appeal against this decision”, is the comment on the fine imposed by Ireland from a WhatsApp spokesperson, who points out how the platform “is committed to providing a secure and private service".
