The European Union has begun the process of lifting punitive measures against Kosovo, while 205 million euros in financial assistance is expected to be released early next year.
The news was confirmed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced that the funds will come from the 216 million euros planned for Kosovo, following the decision to partially lift the measures.
"I am happy to announce that we are moving forward with lifting the measures against Kosovo. We are programming 216 million euros in financial assistance and intend to release 205 million euros early next year," Von der Leyen wrote on the X platform.
She described this development as good news, emphasizing that the process will continue until the measures imposed by the EU are completely lifted.
Meanwhile, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has announced that the European Union will lift all punitive measures by the end of January.
Following the EU-Western Balkans Summit held in Brussels, Osmani stated that he had received direct confirmation from Von der Leyen for the complete lifting of the measures during January.
On Tuesday, the EU lifted some of the measures imposed on Kosovo in 2023.
According to a letter from the EU's Director-General for Enlargement, Gert Jan Koopman, funds have been released for four projects, following the assessment that there has been a "proper transfer of local government in the north" following the elections held in October.
The punitive measures were imposed in 2023 due to tensions in northern Kosovo, while the decision to gradually lift them is seen as an important step towards normalizing relations between Kosovo and the European Union./Telegraph.
