Venice is threatened by continuous and irreversible sea level rises, announced the National System of Environmental Protection (SNPA), in its first report on the impact of climate change in Italy.
"Not only is the sea rising, but the land beneath the lagoon city is sinking," the report says.
Floods from rising water levels in Venice have recently been contained by the so-called MOSE dam system.
