One of Kosovo's main tourist attractions has reopened, but the lack of tourists is putting its future at risk.
Brezovica Ski Resort is the largest and most popular ski destination in Kosovo, located in the Sharr Mountains. Like many other resorts across Europe, Brezovica had to close its doors for public safety when the coronavirus hit the continent.
The world-class snow and terrain offered by this Balkan site attracts thousands of skiers and snowboarders every year. The area is admired for its blend of eastern and western cultures and beautiful scenery.
In recent months, the resort has taken cautious steps to reopen – always with the health of its guests in mind. Despite this, only half its usual numbers have been seen throughout this winter – and this is affecting local businesses which also rely on tourism.
"If this situation (with the pandemic) continues, we cannot survive," said Ridvan Ademi, a local bar owner. "Without any financial help from the state, we won't be able to sustain much longer."
Brezovica is particularly popular with local Kosovar skiers, as well as tourists from North Macedonia and Albania.
