Under the EU Investment Plan, €18 billion has been mobilised to date, including €6 billion in grants for the Western Balkans.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made this statement during a speech at the results of the EU-Western Balkans Summit held in Brussels on December 17.
She noted that more than 68 major projects are being implemented across the region to finance critical infrastructure in the areas of transport, energy, digital communications and the environment. She noted that these investments make the region more competitive and better integrate it into the EU single market.
As a result of the continued growth plan, the economies of the Western Balkan countries are expected to grow by 3% next year.
According to von der Leyen, enlargement has become a real possibility for the first time in more than a decade. "It is a strategic choice and an investment in our common security and freedom," she noted.
The President of the European Commission said that Albania and Montenegro have made significant progress in this regard. Kosovo is also moving in the right direction. After some reforms here, the EU plans to allocate 216 million euros in financial assistance to the region.
