Turkey is getting closer to the Taliban in Afghanistan

Erdogan must get NATO's approval

Turkey is aiming to be the focus of international diplomacy with the offer of the rapid resumption of work at the Kabul airport, an important condition for the arrival of humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. After the withdrawal of international troops, this airport is no longer in operation.

Since the beginning of the NATO international mission, Ankara has been present in Afghanistan with 2000 military troops. The main task of the Turks was to secure the Kabul airport.

At the NATO meeting in June, President Erdogan talked with US President Joe Biden about Ankara's military support in Kabul. At that time, it was said that Turkey could take over the security of the airport after the withdrawal of the Americans.

Turkish President Erdogan's intentions do not seem to be limited to the airport. Before the Taliban suddenly took Kabul, Ankara had believed that it could define its new role in Afghanistan, always in agreement with the development of an increasingly independent foreign policy of Ankara.

That Turkey has tried to boost its profile with Afghanistan was also seen in the attempt to turn Istanbul into a venue for peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government, Turkey experts say. But this did not happen, because the Taliban refused.

Turkey, viewed by many Western observers as a Muslim-majority country, could play a key role in talks with the Taliban. Taliban spokesman Sheyl Shaheen has made it clear that all foreign armed forces must withdraw from the country. Even the Turkish president played with the religious card since according to him there is no contradiction between the faith of the Taliban and Turkey.

EU Foreign Ministers have decided to coordinate actions to maintain a European presence in Kabul for the evacuation of people who have been part of international staff and who want to leave Afghanistan.
