Toshkovsi: By June-July, I expect the "Safe City" system to be implemented throughout the country

Minister of Internal Affairs, Pance Toshkovski, said that by June-July, he expects the "Safe City" system to be implemented throughout the territory of North Macedonia.

"I hope that by June-July next year we will implement the "Safe City" throughout the country, and I am sure that by the end of 2026 we will implement it in every city as an intelligent system. The citizens of Macedonia deserve to implement an intelligent solution in Tetovo, Skopje, but also in Berovo, Delchevo, Struga and Ohrid that should follow the European "zero casualties" strategy, that is, the strategy that by 2050 we will have no human casualties as a result of non-compliance with traffic rules," said Toshkovski.

He recalled that the testing period for recording misdemeanors from the "Safe City" system is valid until February 1st of next year.

According to Toshkovski, this is only part of the steps that need to be taken, but even in this short period of time, within the testing period, the initial information is that the citizens of North Macedonia indeed behave differently when driving a vehicle than before.

"And I am very pleased that the number of road accidents with serious bodily injuries and the total number of road accidents, where we are implementing this project, is decreasing. This is very important. The first and greatest goal, I would say the ultimate goal of implementing this system, is to save at least one more human life than before. So, the results that the 'Safe City' should offer are truly excellent", emphasized Minister Toshkovski.

He added that no one will be excluded from the "Safe City", except for police vehicles that take action, emergency medical assistance and fire department vehicles. During this, he mentioned his personal example when he received a warning for a traffic violation and this was made public.

“Safe City” cameras installed at Skopje intersections automatically record traffic violations starting from December 1. The fines were scheduled to start being implemented from January 1, 2026, but this has been postponed to February 1, 2026.
