The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that a record temperature of 18,3 degrees Celsius was measured in Antarctica in February 2020.
WMO always checks that measuring devices are recording accurate temperatures, before confirming this record. The previous record was 17,5 degrees Celsius in 2015.
"Antarctica is among the fastest warming regions on the planet, nearly three degrees Celsius in the last 50 years. This new temperature record is in line with the climate change we are experiencing," said WMO chief Petteri Taalas.
Glaciers and polar ice caps of Antarctica are formed as a result of snowfall and flow into the ocean.
