Taliban ban women from sports because they may be 'exposed'

The deputy chairman of Afghanistan's Cultural Commission has said that women are not allowed to play cricket and perhaps no other sport. Cricket is a very popular sport in Afghanistan. His statement was quoted by Australian public broadcaster SBS.

"I think women will not be allowed to play cricket because it is not necessary for women to play cricket," Australian media quoted Ahmadullah Wasiq as saying in an interview on September 8. According to him, this type of sport can reveal the face and body of women, therefore "Islam does not allow women to be seen in that way".

In his reasoning he said that now we are in the age of media and pictures and videos of women can be published and then people can watch them.

Women in Afghanistan are facing an uncertain future after the Taliban took over. Sportsmen are in the same situation. During their rule in the 1990s, the Taliban banned most forms of entertainment and many sports.

Wasiq last month told SBS that the Taliban would allow the sport of cricket to be played by men and had given approval for the men's national team to travel to Australia for a match in November.

But following the Taliban's recent announcement of a ban on women's sports, Cricket Australia said on September 9 that if reports of a ban on women's sports turned out to be completely true then the match would not take place.

"Our vision is that cricket is a sport for everyone and that's why we support women in the sport," Cricket Australia said in a statement. Australian Sports Minister Richard Colbeck criticized the Taliban's decision on women's sport. "The exclusion of women from sport at any level is unacceptable," Colbeck said in a statement.

"The Taliban's attitudes towards women and their individual rights should not be accepted by the international sports community," he said..

US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power in October 2001.

The Taliban were then harboring Osama Bin Laden and other al-Qaeda figures linked to the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

In May 2021, the withdrawal of foreign forces began after 20 years of presence in this country. The Taliban quickly took control of the country. They have already introduced a government cabinet led by the militant group.

American President Joe Biden has said that the American withdrawal is reasonable, as American forces have ensured that Afghanistan will no longer become a base for foreign jihadists to carry out plots against the West.REL
