Support from China and Russia, the West ready the criteria for recognition

These days are crucial for the future of Afghanistan. Mullah Baradari, the political leader of the Taliban, arrived this Saturday in Kabul, where he is expected to organize talks on the creation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

The Taliban said during the week that no party is excluded from participation, as their main goal is to create a prosperous and just state for all under the Islamic constitution, otherwise known as Sharia.

The talks will start in a few days, while expected results can be had in the first days of September after the completion of the evacuation process of the Western diplomatic staffs and their Afghan collaborators.

For the United States and NATO allies, the Taliban are an illegitimate government that took power by force.

However, US President Biden said that Washington was waiting for the approach that the new government would show to decide whether they would recognize him or not.

Next week, G7 representatives will meet to discuss these developments.

The leaders could agree on a list of criteria the Taliban would have to meet before they would consider diplomatic recognition.

While countries like China and Russia gave the first signals of recognition by immediately extending the hand of cooperation to the Taliban regime. Turkey is on the same line.
