Counter-terrorism police in Australia have arrested seven men who are believed to have been heading to Bondi Beach, where a real massacre took place a few days ago.
New South Wales Police received information that the individuals had travelled from Melbourne and intended to go to Bondi Beach, the Telegraph reports.
It is understood that police followed a cautious approach to the information, given the climate following the terrorist attack in Bondi on Sunday night.
However, dramatic scenes unfolded in Sydney's southwest as heavily armed officers fired rubber bullets and crashed a white Hyundai into the side of the road following a traffic stop.
A second vehicle, which reportedly had a Victorian provisional licence plate visible on the front seat, was also seized a short distance away.
Two men were arrested face down in the street behind a vehicle, while images and footage from bystanders at the scene showed several others lined up on the sidewalk, sitting or kneeling, their hands tied behind their backs. Several armed officers stood guard behind the group.
It is not clear what the intention of the men who travelled to Bondi was, but it is understood to have prompted a strong response from the police.
At 8:18 p.m. Thursday evening, police said the operation was over.
"Tactical Operations Police responded to information received that a violent act may be being planned," authorities said in a statement.
"Police subsequently seized two cars as part of the investigation. While the investigation continues, seven men are assisting police with their inquiries. At this point, police have not identified any links to the current police investigation into the Bondi terrorist attack," it said, among other things. /Telegraph/
