Scientists create a painless test for diabetics

Scientists are working to mass-produce the 'holy grail' of blood sugar testing to make it easier for diabetics to control their glucose levels.

Researchers at the University of Newcastle in Australia have created a non-invasive, convenient and painless strip that checks glucose levels in saliva.

Through this, people with diabetes will not have to prick their finger to draw blood during their daily check-ups. They could simply place the strip on their tongue, wait a few minutes, and then see the results on a smartphone app.

The project has secured $6.3m (£3.4m) in funding from the Australian government to set up a facility to mass produce the tape if it passes clinical trials.

The production of this strip will start this year and it will be on the market in 2023. This strip can be bought in bulk at the pharmacy at a very low price.

The project is led by Paul Dastoor, a professor of physics at the University of Newcastle in New South Wales. Professor Dastoor was inspired by his wife, a primary school teacher who has been helping young children monitor their blood glucose levels.

“It's a harrowing feeling when the lunch bell rings and everyone runs to the playground, stopping a few unfortunate children who stay behind to prick their finger for blood testing at any time. Our vision was to create a world where no one needs to draw blood. This new test opens up the prospect of painless, low-cost glucose testing and hopefully much better outcomes for those suffering from diabetes. /tvklan.al
