80 thousand civilians were evacuated by American forces

The last flight of US forces from Kabul airport on Monday evening marked the end of the US's longest war in another country.

A full 20 years of trying to bring democracy to Afghanistan with 2,461 US soldiers killed and more than 20,000 wounded. More than 1100 forces from coalition countries and more than 100 Afghan forces and civilians have died in this war.

More than 1 trillion dollars spent by Washington in this war. The final withdrawal of US troops was met by the Taliban with gunfire in the skies over Kabul. Hundreds of weapons and modern military equipment, including airplanes and military helicopters bought by the Pentagon for the former failed Afghan army, have fallen into their hands. However, some of these vehicles were destroyed in the flight by the American soldiers.

"American soldiers left Kabul airport and our nation won its full independence." said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. The US evacuated almost 80,000 civilians from Kabul in recent weeks. This figure also includes 6,000 American civilians.

More than 122,000 people have so far been evacuated by coalition forces since August 14, the day before the Taliban took control of Kabul.

The Pentagon claims there are still around 2,000 IS fighters in Afghanistan while the Taliban have released IS militants from prisons.

US and allied forces entered Afghanistan in 2001, following the September 11, 2001 Al Qaeda terrorist attacks on the US.

The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution calling on the Taliban to ensure safe exit for people trying to leave Afghanistan.

The United States, United Kingdom and France drafted the resolution, but China and Russia abstained.

The US hopes the Taliban will stick to their August 27 statement promising Afghans they will be able to travel out of the country by land and air now that they have taken control of Kabul airport.
