Health experts: The situation can change if citizens wear masks in public spaces
The US is projected to see nearly 100,000 more deaths from COVID-19 by December 1. But this grim forecast can be halted according to health experts if everyone wears masks in public spaces.
In other words, what the coronavirus has in store this fall all depends on human behavior.
"Behavior will really determine if, when, and how much the current wave subsides,” said Lauren Ancel Meyers, director of the University of Texas COVID-19 Modeling Consortium.
The United States is in the grips of a fourth wave of infection this summer, caused by the Delta variant that is responsible for the surge in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Deaths are averaging more than 1,100 per day, reversing the situation in March, and as a result, hospitals in the US are facing an unprecedented influx of patients.
Amidst the alarm over the Delta variant in recent weeks, the decline in vaccinations changed the situation. The number of vaccinations delivered per day has increased by around 80% over the past month to an average of around 900,000.
A growing number of employers are requiring their workers to be vaccinated after the federal government gave full approval to the Pfizer vaccine earlier this week. In the US, 52% of the population is fully vaccinated and 61% have received at least one dose.
