US Supreme Court gives boost to Republicans in Texas, suspends decision that banned new electoral map

The United States Supreme Court on Friday suspended a ruling blocking the new Texas redistricting map, paving the way for Republicans to secure more seats in Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections. The decision by the country's highest court, where conservatives enjoy a majority, comes just hours after Texas requested the use of the new map pending a full review of the case.

The order signed by Justice Samuel Alito temporarily blocks a federal ruling from Tuesday that struck down the electoral map as “racial electoral manipulation.” Opponents of the new map have until Monday to file their response, while the Supreme Court is expected to decide whether to allow its use in the end. The trial court’s November 18 ruling argued that Texas’s redistricting discriminated against black and Hispanic voters, who make up a significant portion of the population in the traditionally Republican state. That court had ordered the 2021 map to be reinstated for the 2026 election.

Redrawing electoral maps has become an open political battleground ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. President Donald Trump has called on Republican-controlled states to redraw electoral boundaries to increase their narrow lead over Democrats in the House of Representatives, where Republicans currently hold a 219-214 advantage. Texas is seeking to secure up to five additional seats for Republicans, while Democrats are pursuing the same strategy in California, where a referendum this month aims to secure five new seats for their party in the nation’s most populous state. Similar redistricting processes are underway in other states, reflecting the intensity of the partisan race.

The Supreme Court's latest decision gives Republicans a significant breathing space in the battle for control of Congress, while the Texas case is expected to remain in the spotlight in the coming months.
