How often does fuel consumption increase due to driver carelessness?

It's the winter season and many people will be heading off on trips, usually to the mountains in Austria, Italy, France... for a ski vacation. The vehicle is loaded, there's a box on the roof, and if it snows, the whole car can look like a big icing cake.

Many things increase fuel consumption and affect finances, and now the German Automobile Club (ADAC) has decided to further clarify this topic.

The main culprit is the roof box, which drivers often leave on the vehicle even after winter trips. But the truth is that it can increase fuel consumption by up to 11 percent at 80 km/h. The reason is that it increases air resistance.

Use the roof box only when necessary

Roof boxes are the biggest additional consumer of fuel in winter. Even at a speed of 80 km/h, consumption increases by around 11 percent, while at 130 km/h it can reach up to 0,2 liters per kilometer. The reason is the additional air resistance that the box creates. By using it only when absolutely necessary, you can save a lot of fuel.

Save electricity.

Many people think that electricity in a car is free, but in reality it consumes additional fuel. Additional equipment such as heated seats, electric rear windows and heated steering wheels consume more than many people think. By quickly turning these devices off when they are not needed, you can reduce consumption by up to 1 deciliter of fuel per kilometer. However, you should not skimp on electrical systems when they are really necessary.

Lose unnecessary weight

Loading your vehicle also increases fuel consumption. Avoid traveling with heavy things in your car when you don't need to. For every extra 100 kg you load on your vehicle, it consumes up to 0,03 liters of additional fuel per kilometer.

Remove all the snow from the car.

Driving with snow on it is not only dangerous. It also increases air resistance and uses up extra fuel. By removing the snow, you can reduce your fuel consumption.

Avoid unnecessary work with the engine idling.

Many people believe that vehicles are in better condition if they are left idling for a long time, but this is not true. For four minutes of idling in winter, a vehicle consumes an average of 0,1 liters of fuel. /Telegraph/
