Moscow achieves its goal of increasing gas export capabilities

Construction of the much-discussed Russian gas pipeline "Nord Stream 2" passing through the Baltic Sea has been completed. The news was announced by the energy giant Gazprom. With the completion of this project, Moscow's goal of increasing its ability to export gas is achieved.

The highly politicized pipeline will double Russia's gas export capacity to Europe via the Baltic Sea and allow Moscow to bypass its political foe Ukraine as a key route for its lucrative gas exports to Europe.

The Gazprom company started construction of the 1,200 km long pipeline from Russia to Germany five years ago. The $11 billion project was halted in late 2019 when then-US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions against it. Construction started again about a year later.

The US government has repeatedly criticized the project as making Europe too dependent on Russia for its energy supplies, leading to particular tensions with Germany.

However, in July Washington and Berlin announced an agreement in which they pledged to take action in case Russia tries to use energy as a weapon or carries out further aggressive actions against Ukraine. The gas pipeline will supply Germany with 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
