Intensive care beds close to exhaustion
The United States set a new daily record for the entire period of the pandemic. In the last 24 hours, 300 people tested positive, 855 more than the previous record set on January 78.
The new infections are mainly in southern federal states, such as Texas and Florida. The authorities say that the increase in infections has caused an influx of patients in hospitals, whose number is close to the records of last winter's wave, when more than 140 were admitted. Nearly 80% of intensive care beds are occupied.
The number of deaths has also increased, however the average number of victims is half of the previous wave, thanks to the mass vaccination of the population that has crossed over 60% of adults. The United States counts over 40 million affected by COVID over 1 and a half years of pandemic.
There is also an increase in infections in Great Britain, while the downward trend is maintained in the countries of the European Union.
