The Czech government, approved by the president on December 15, rejected the European Union's migration pact at a meeting held on Tuesday.
This information was published by the Czech News Agency (CNA), citing the country's Prime Minister Andrej Babis.
“At today’s meeting, the government rejected the EU migration pact,” the prime minister was quoted as saying. The draft program statement of the Cabinet of Ministers foresees the rejection of the EU migration pact and the preparation of new legislative acts on the regulation of migration and asylum.
According to the decision presented by the agency, the government rejected the distribution of refugees among EU countries through quotas and expressed its position that illegal migrants should not be accepted at all.
“The government rejects the EU pact on migration and asylum in its current form and will actively work to strengthen it,” the document says. The Czech Republic insists on strengthening the EU’s external borders, fighting smugglers and solving the problems of illegal immigrants outside the community.
The cabinet also rejected the EU's carbon trading scheme (ETS 2), decided to lower state electricity tariffs and supported a proposal from the governing coalition parties to freeze politicians' salary increases until the end of 2030. If this rate is approved by parliament, their salaries will not increase from 2026.
