President Macron visits Iraq

French President Emmanuel Macron has visited the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, which was destroyed during the war to defeat the Islamic State group in 2017.

Macron said ISIS carried out deadly attacks around the world. He said ISIS made no distinction between people's religion and nationality when it came to killing, noting that the extremists killed many Muslims.

"We will do everything we can, side by side, with the governments of the region and the Iraqi government to fight against terrorism,” Macron said after a visit to a mosque that was destroyed by extremists.

The French president declared that he would help rebuild monuments, churches, schools and mosques. Macron made a list of promises during his meeting in Iraq, including opening a consulate. The president vowed to keep troops in Iraq regardless of the Americans' choice and as long as the Iraqi government seeks France's support.

This is Macron's second official visit to Iraq since he took office as president. Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, became the bureaucratic and financial pillar of ISIS. It took a long nine-month battle to finally liberate the city in July 2017.

Among the many civilians killed, the war left behind great material damage. Many Iraqis have had to rebuild on their own amid a years-long financial crisis.
