Obstacle for Afghan refugees along the border with Belarus
Following the example of Turkey and Greece, Poland will also build border barriers against possible influxes of refugees. The Polish government is planning to build a barbed wire fence and send soldiers to its eastern borders.
The situation on the border with Belarus is problematic, where the arrival of illegal immigrants has increased in recent days. Tens of thousands of refugees and immigrants are stationed in the border areas between the two countries.
They have come mainly from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, countries affected by crises in recent years. According to experts, the most recent influx was prompted by the wave of Afghans who fled their country after the Taliban came to power.
This wave is also being used by other refugees from Muslim-majority countries, mainly in the Middle East.
Authorities in Warsaw are also drafting a new legal package that is expected to make asylum procedures more difficult and that criminalizes illegal border crossings.
Poland is part of the countries that serve as the external borders of the European Union, which have borne the main burden during the massive influx of refugees in recent years.
The government of this country also has a radical attitude towards foreigners and has often been criticized by senior union officials.
