They opposed the new restrictions against Covid-19

Australian officers used tear gas and pepper spray in the faces of protesters as the protest turned into an unbridled expression of anger at the authorities and the "health dictatorship" imposed by them according to the protesters.

Several of the officers required surgery for severe facial injuries, authorities said. They added that protests also took place in the cities of Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns, but that of the capital Melbourne was the fiercest.

In a statement, the police said that there were many peaceful protesters among the crowd, but a large number of them had come focused on violence.

In the largest of the three protests held in Melbourne, clashes broke out immediately upon their encounter with police cordons.

The protest lasted several hours and in many cases the demonstrators appeared to have subdued the approximately 700 police officers on duty.

They held placards that read "Vaccines kill", "Open schools and parks!" as well as demanding the dismissal of Prime Minister Dan Andrews.

As the Melbourne protest escalated, demonstrators chanted "Shame on you, shame on you all" at the police as they set off fireworks and threw sharp objects.

The police shot at them with rubber balls, tear gas and fuel in their faces.
