An 18-year-old will become the world's youngest person to fly in space. Oliver Daemen will join American billionaire Jeff Bezos on the first human flight of his space company, Blue Origin, on July 20.
Daemen will fly in place of an anonymous bidder, who paid $28 million for the seat at a public auction. The winning bidder cannot fly on the mission "due to scheduling conflicts," Blue Origin said.
Oliver is the son of Joe Daemen, chief executive of the Netherlands-based investment company Somerset Capital Partners.
Joes Daemen secured a seat on the second flight but was moved to the first after the bidder withdrew, Blue Origin said.
He then offered the seat to his 18-year-old son, who is a physics student. Origin Blue did not say how much Daeman paid for the ticket.
Oliver Daemen will join Bezos, his brother Mark, and pilot Wally Funk, 82. Funk will be the oldest person to fly in space.
