Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani praised her American counterpart, Donald Trump, for supporting peace in the Western Balkans and the wider European region.
Osmani, speaking in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Wednesday, said that the presence of US troops in Kosovo was "the biggest obstacle and prevention of an escalation in the region."
The American soldiers are part of the NATO-led peacekeeping force that has been in Kosovo since the end of the war with neighboring Serbia in 1999, the Telegraph reports.
Kosovo's economic progress has been slowed by months of political deadlock, which Osmani said he hopes can be resolved in early elections on December 28.
The country is heading to a second snap vote this year after election winner Albin Kurti failed to form a majority coalition, as parties ignored his leadership style that has annoyed European and American allies, Bloomberg writes.
Osmani said he thinks Kosovar politicians will have a "more constructive approach" to working together now.
"I am very, very optimistic because we need institutions so that we can move forward with major projects with the European Union and the United States of America," she said. /Telegraph/
