One year since the Himara tragedy/ In memory of Jonada, the 7-year-old girl who was killed by a dinghy, there are still boats breaking the perimeter

A year ago on the beach of Potami in Himara, 7-year-old Jonada Avdia tragically lost her life while bathing on the seashore, after being hit by a dinghy, which, contrary to the rules, was sailing inside the security cordon. The tragedy was caused by the policeman Arjan Tase, who was navigating among the vacationers while they were bathing and because of a wrong maneuver took the life of the minor. Tase was a former police chief in Himare, while when the incident happened he held the position of police chief in Elbasan.

"The Avdia family, originally from Tropoja, had come for a holiday in their homeland, as they had been living in England for years."

The tragedy brought the reaction of the entire public opinion, where protests were held for several days in a row. This tragedy also brought the reaction of the police, who blocked all the vessels along the entire coastline, while this year also the controls and punishments for the drivers of the vessels that violate the rules have been increased and there is a detailed control by the police.

On July 11, the Prosecutor's Office of Vlora closed the investigations and officially charged the former officer and 8 other policemen, who will now face justice for the charge of indirect intentional murder. According to the Prosecutor's Office, Tase did not respect the restricted area for vacationers, which should not be crossed by watercraft, and made a wrong maneuver while driving the boat, hitting the 7-year-old girl to death.

"Jonada's death shocked us and made us reflect on the society we live in. We all as a society must fight hard, in every way, so that such events never happen again and that justice is done for Jonada. The perpetrator must receive the maximum punishment from justice, a punishment that has not yet been given and that we all expect."
