From storms in the USA to fires in Turkey and Greece / Global natural disasters cost over 70 billion dollars

Global economic losses from natural and human disasters are estimated at 77 billion dollars, for the first half of the year, the Swiss insurance agency "Swiss Re" announced today.

"The amount of economic losses is below the ten-year average, which is more than 108 billion dollars for the first semesters," determined Swiss Re.

"But the costs that insurers will have to cover will increase by 4 percent, to 42 billion dollars, including 40 billion for natural disasters," added the Swiss group.

For insurers, it is the most expensive first half since 2011, when the bill soared due to earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand. On average, the bill for insurers over the past ten years is about $33 billion, during the first semesters.

Also, so-called secondary climate events, compared to very large natural disasters, represent an "increasing risk".

Winter storm Uri, which hit the US in February, with frost reaching as far as Texas, caused $15 billion in losses.

Storms and hail in June, which damaged cars and homes, particularly in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic as well as Switzerland, generated costs estimated at $4,5 billion for insurers.

After the extreme temperatures at the end of June in Canada, the second part of the year has already begun with an increase in climate damage, between fires in California, floods in Germany and China, as well as fires in Turkey, Greece and Italy.
