Turkey will start a major cleaning campaign today to save the Sea of Marmara from excessive algae.
Reiterating a new 22-point action plan, Turkey's Ministry of Environment and Urbanization announced that it will begin a non-stop campaign to clean up the latest growth of slime covering the surface of parts of the Sea of Marmara in the country's northwest.
The Ministry announced that the work will be carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, competent institutions, non-governmental organizations in coordination with coastal municipalities.
The slime is the overgrowth of microscopic algae called phytoplankton. The thick, mucus-like layer contains a variety of micro-organisms and is caused by rising seawater temperatures due to global warming, stagnant water and pollution.
Metropolitan municipalities, provincial districts, as well as district associations will also carry out all the necessary work in the transportation and management of mucus and waste collected from the sea, writes AA.
The campaign will start at 2 pm local time at Caddebostan beach in Istanbul with the participation of the Minister of Environment and Urbanism, Murat Kurum, the Governor of Istanbul, Ali Yerlikaya, heads of districts and non-governmental organizations.
