The importance of political and economic relations between the EU and the Western Balkans partners, especially in the current geopolitical context and the need for increasingly strong ties between the EU and our region, the full and clear reaffirmation of the perspective of membership of the Western Balkans in the Union, as well as the progress achieved in the enlargement process, reflected in the latest Commission report, are the main topics at the EU-Western Balkans summit in Brussels.
North Macedonia is represented there by the Prime Minister, the Minister of European Integration, and the Foreign Minister. Among other things, they expect to discuss unblocking the country's European integration process, namely, finding a solution with official Sofia.
"It will be a good opportunity, first of all, to confirm the EU's strategy for enlargement with the Western Balkans. This is the general message that will be issued, which is always welcome and conveys a positive signal to the region. I believe that the leaders from our side of the region and the EU countries will also talk about many concrete initiatives that the EU has, in the direction of what is called integration in several steps... We want to talk with Bulgaria, because a solution must be found to this problem, which is blocking our progress towards the EU... I regret that in recent weeks, in return, we have not received good confidence from the Bulgarian side, that we can find a rational solution for this bilateral issue, which at no time can jeopardize the interests in which our Government speaks and stands in these positions.", - declared Foreign Minister Timco Mucunski.
According to the conclusions that several media outlets had access to a few days ago, it is stated that the European Council welcomes the country's commitment to European integration and encourages it to intensify efforts to advance reforms.
“The Council notes that North Macedonia has not yet completed the constitutional changes it has undertaken. The Council confirms its readiness to convene the international conference once again, without further delays or additional political decisions, once North Macedonia has implemented the obligation, in accordance with its internal procedures.”
The summit will underline the importance of tangible progress in reforms, approximation with European legislation, regional cooperation, good neighborly relations and reconciliation.
