Giant pandas are no longer threatened as an endangered species, although they are still endangered.
This is what the Chinese authorities have decided, noting that the number of these animals in the wild has reached 1.
"The new classification reflects their improved living conditions as a result of long-term conservation efforts, including habitat expansion," said Cui Shuhong, director of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had already removed giant pandas from the endangered species list since 2016 by reclassifying them as "vulnerable".
On that occasion, however, Beijing contested the decision, stating that it could lead to easing conservation efforts for these animals.
