Thousands of supporters of Honduras' outgoing leftist government demonstrated in the capital Tegucigalpa on Wednesday to denounce what they called "fraud" in the November 30 presidential election, the results of which have yet to be officially announced, almost three weeks after the vote.
While right-wing businessman Nasri Asfoura, who was strongly supported by US President Donald Trump, leads by a narrow margin – less than two percentage points – over his opponent, another right-wing candidate and TV presenter Salvador Nasralla, the announcement of final official results is still pending, due to discrepancies in counting protocols at some polling stations. The candidates are accusing each other of fraud.
Around 5,000 supporters of the LIBRE party, to which outgoing president Xiomara Castro belongs — who personally participated in the mobilization — demonstrated to denounce an electoral "coup" and Donald Trump's "interference."
Also present, the party's candidate Rixi Moncada, who ranks third and is far behind her two main opponents according to official results, again demanded, in a speech at the rally, that the elections be "annulled", speaking of the biggest "fraud" in such a process "in the history" of the Central American country.
LIBRE, like Nasrallah, is calling for a new “vote for vote” recount, an idea that Asfoura rejects.
The National Electoral Council (CNE, the electoral commission) officially has until December 30th to declare the winner of the elections.
