The Swedish Navy announced that yesterday armed personnel in uniform were seen on ships linked to the so-called Russian "shadow fleet".
Moscow is strengthening its military presence along key shipping routes in the Baltic Sea, reports themoscowtimes.
Marko Petkovic, commander of operations for the Swedish navy, told Swedish television SVT that the individuals were likely employed by private security companies.
He added that Russian naval activity in the region has become "more permanent and visible," with warships regularly operating in strategic areas of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland.
"The Russian Navy is periodically present at various nodes in the Baltic Sea, in the Gulf of Finland and in the Baltic Sea, and it seems that there it somehow acts as support for this secret fleet," Petkovic said.
Military sources cited by SVT said that Russian actions have focused on an ongoing patrol operation near major sea lanes, carried out by the Baltic Fleet. /Telegraph/
