The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, held a virtual meeting with the Under Secretary of the US Department of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, as well as Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy R. Sherman, regarding the issue of housing Afghans in Kosovo.
The Prime Minister's Office announced this through a communique sent to the media, as it announced that the expenses for the refugees will be covered by the USA.
"Political Matters, Nuland expressed their deep appreciation for friendly countries, including Kosovo, that have shown their willingness and offered their willingness to temporarily shelter Afghan citizens, applicants in the process for 'Special Immigration Visas' (SIV) in the United States of America. "Sherman emphasized that all expenses from the temporary housing of Afghan citizens will be covered by the American government," the communiqué states, among other things.
At the 26th meeting, the Government approved the request of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Jelal Sveçla, for granting temporary protection to persons at risk from the internal conflict in Afghanistan.
It is not yet known the exact number of Afghans who will be sheltered in Kosovo, although security experts have estimated that the country can accommodate around 3,500 people.
The two places that have been rumored for housing people coming from Afghanistan are the Innovative Park in Prizren, as well as the French KFOR camp in Vushtrri.
