At least 46 dead in the US
The death toll from flooding as the remnants of Hurricane Ida hit cities in the eastern US rose sharply to 46 on Thursday, after New Jersey reported that at least 23 people had died there.
Southern New Jersey was also hit by a tornado which caused extensive property damage.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said many people were inside cars at the time of the flood, making it impossible to get out.
Officials have communicated that many people are still missing.
Dozens of people have died in six eastern states, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, after the storm brought heavy rain to these areas.
In the Philadelphia area, several streets were flooded, delaying the city's rail and bus services and forcing many businesses to close.

Rescuers took boats out through flooded streets Thursday morning and around Philadelphia, northern Delaware and parts of New York state, pulling people from flooded homes.
While in Pennsylvania, according to State Emergency Management Director Randy Padfield, thousands of rescues have been carried out.
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has also offered his support: "There is a lot of damage, and I made it clear to the governors that my team at … FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is on the ground and ready to provide whatever assistance is needed.”
In New York City, rescue crews helped passengers out of stalled subway trains Wednesday night. NYPD Chief Rodney Harrison said Thursday that 835 people were rescued from the subway system.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told CNN the state is used to disasters, but this would be a massive cleanup.
"I would urge people to stay at home, check on your neighbors, make sure they're OK," she said.
Murphy called the flooding that affected New Jersey "historic by any measure."
"It has never flooded like this, it has never rained like this,” Murphy said. Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared for the states of New York and New Jersey./tvklan.al
