More than ten million Americans are unable to pay rent, according to a study by the Institute for Social Research "Center on Budget and Policy Priorities".
About 3.6 million of them do not rule out the possibility of now receiving the written notice informing them of the date of eviction from the house.
The reason for this is that the US Supreme Court has blocked a moratorium that protects tenants who are unable to pay rent from eviction proceedings during the corona pandemic.
The nine justices, mostly conservatives, argued that a nationwide extension of the moratorium would need congressional approval.

However, at the beginning of August, the American health authority CDC extended the relevant moratorium, which had been in place since September 2020. The head of the authority Rochelle Walensky justified the step with the rapid increase in COVID-19 infections from the Delta variant.
Opposition Republicans in Congress were not ready to support such a decision. Nancy Pelosi, spokeswoman for the House of Representatives, called the impasse "a great act of cruelty".
As the US economy generally recovers, rents have risen to a new record high. Monthly rents increased by more than 8% between June 2020 and June 2021 alone.
People with insecure jobs, little education, and minorities are among those increasingly unable to afford rising housing costs.
