July 2021 has been considered the warmest month in the history of the planet since global temperatures began to be recorded, 142 years ago.
The historic record was announced last Friday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), noting the dire consequences of climate change.
"July is usually the world's hottest month of the year, but July 2021 surpassed all previous ones to become the hottest July on record. This new negative record is adding to the increasingly worsening course of global climate change," NOAA Chief Rick Spinrand said in a statement.
The findings come just days after the United Nations released a lengthy international climate report documenting the extreme effects of global warming that are already being felt around the world.
Mercury broke every previous record in Asia. They were followed by North and South America, Africa and Australia. Many parts of the western United States also had serious problems due to unbearable heat, according to data released by the service.
But the hot "nightmare" does not end here. Just days before NOAA's official announcement, the mercury in Sicily soared to 48.8 degrees Celsius.
"The planet is sounding the alarm on climate change," said CBS News meteorologist and climate expert Jeff Berardelli. "We will continue to systematically exceed previous records and reach new, unprecedented levels as long as the planet warms," he continued.
Among the latest findings from the report, scientists found that Arctic sea ice shrank by 18.8% last month, or 1.14 million square kilometers, and the average daily loss was 36.800 square miles. This is the fourth lowest percentage in the last 43 years.
In fact, the tropical cyclones that did occur exceeded normal levels for the season, according to relevant research.
