The US, the EU and several other countries have declared that Beijing poses a security threat

The UK, US and EU have accused China of carrying out a major cyber attack in March this year. The attack targeted Microsoft Exchange servers, affecting over a quarter of servers worldwide.

The EU was the first to issue a statement saying the attack came from "China's territory", while the British government said Chinese state-backed actors were responsible. The countries have also said that China's Ministry of State Security was responsible for other espionage activities.

Western intelligence officials say what China is doing is far more serious than anything seen before. Lu Kang, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, was asked in mid-March about the allegations made by four private security firms that were investigating the cyber attacks. The firms blamed an advanced threat group from China for sophisticated network intrusions.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has stated that the People's Republic of China is showing its pattern of irresponsible, disruptive and destabilizing behavior in cyberspace, which poses a major threat to economic and national security.

The US Department of Justice announced that four Chinese nationals were charged with a global hacking campaign that targeted dozens of companies, universities and government agencies in the United States and abroad between 2011 and 2018 that focused on information that would significantly benefit Chinese companies. and businesses. Chinese officials have previously said Beijing is also a victim of piracy and opposes all forms of cyber-attacks.

The opening of a new front in governments' fight against piracy comes a month after G7 and NATO leaders agreed with President Joe Biden at summits in England and Brussels.
