The British ask for an extension of the stay beyond August 31
Chaos at Kabul airport is delaying evacuation operations for diplomatic staff, citizens of Western countries and Afghan NATO partners.
The delays have forced the British government to ask US President Joe Biden to extend beyond August 31 the deadline for American troops to stay at the airport, as it is almost impossible, according to them, to evacuate all the people within this deadline.
The exact figures are still unclear but there are at least 15 thousand people on the lists, who still remain to be evacuated. Operations become difficult as the Taliban are not keeping their promise and are not allowing many NATO partners to enter the airport.
The obstacle for them is the identification among the thousands of Afghans who have flocked around the airport this week, hoping to flee the country, now that Islamic extremists have taken control.
There are about 3 troops of the special units of the American army who are in control of the Kabul airport and are trying to guarantee a safe evacuation. There are also hundreds of members of British, German, and other NATO allies' special military units.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a half-hour telephone conversation, were of the same opinion when they said that the two countries cannot afford another influx.
