Israel today officially delivered the Arrow 3 long-range missile defense system to Germany, thus concluding the largest sale of military equipment in Israel's history, worth over 4 billion euros.
This is the first time Arrow 3 has been deployed outside of Israel and the US, and the first time another country will operate it completely independently. The system will initially be installed at Holzdorf air base, about 120 km south of Berlin, and will later be extended to other areas.
On the Israeli side, the ceremony will be attended by senior military and defense industry leaders. According to German media, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Chancellor Friedrich Merz will not be present, but other senior German military and defense officials will be present.
The Arrow 3 is designed to shoot down ballistic missiles while they are still in the atmosphere. During the 12-day conflict with Iran in June, it shot down hundreds of ballistic missiles launched by Iran and the Tehran-backed Houthi group, with an 86% success rate.
The sale is part of the German initiative "European Sky Shield", which aims to strengthen the continent's air defenses after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Israel and Germany see the deal as a symbol of close and growing defense cooperation, including joint military exercises and the sale of the Israeli TROPHY active defense system for German Leopard 2 tanks.
The first tanks with this system were delivered last month to the German and Norwegian armies.
