Ayatollah Khamenei: Biden makes the same demands as Trump
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused US President Joe Biden on Saturday of making the same demands as his predecessor, Donald Trump, regarding talks to renew the nuclear deal.
This agreement, signed in 2015 between Iran and world powers, lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. But former President Trump withdrew the US from this agreement in 2018. In the last round of talks between Iran and the signatory states of the agreement, there was no progress.
"The current US administration is no different from the past because what it wants from Iran on nuclear issues is worded in other words, but it's basically the same thing as what Trump wanted." Khamenei was quoted as saying.
"The Americans are not ashamed of the nuclear issue even though they withdrew from the deal, now they talk in a way and make demands as if it was Iran that withdrew." he added.
Ayatollah made these comments during the meeting with the newly formed cabinet of the Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi. After the US pulled out of the deal, Washington imposed new sanctions on Iran, and the latter retaliated by violating commitments made in the 2015 deal.
