Hungary announced today that it has signed a five-year gas supply contract with the American energy company Chevron.
The new contract, signed by Chevron and Hungarian public energy company MVM, envisages the supply of 400 million cubic meters of LNG per year over the next five years, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said at a joint press conference with US Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly.
Szijjarto hailed this as a “new golden era” in cooperation between the two countries, reports reuters.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban promised last month, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, that he would continue importing Russian fossil fuels, despite the EU's plan to ban Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.
MVM has signed contracts with British companies Shell, French Engie and Azerbaijani SOCAR in recent months. Thanks to the contract with Chevron, these agreements are expected to enable Hungary to import 1,4 billion cubic meters of gas per year from non-Russian sources.
However, the 15-year contract that Hungary has with Russia's Gazprom foresees the supply of 4,5 billion cubic meters of gas per year until 2036, not counting other supply contracts signed in recent years.
Szijjarto previously said that by the end of November, seven billion cubic meters of Russian gas had reached Hungary. Last year, Hungary consumed about 8,5 billion cubic meters of gas. /Telegraph/
