Immediately after unblocking the 34.6 million euros suspended, the European Union announced that "at the beginning of next year" it will release another 205 million euros, as part of the process of lifting measures against Kosovo.
At the European Union-Western Balkans Summit on Wednesday evening, President Vjosa Osmani announced that the 27-member bloc will lift all measures against Kosovo by the end of January.
While announcing that "we will move forward with the lifting of measures following the peaceful and orderly transfer of local government in the north," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote that the goal is to release 205 million euros for Kosovo at the beginning of the year.
After calling this development good news, columnist Ylli Hoxha emphasized that the two and a half years of punishment should serve as a historical lesson for relations with the EU and its decision-making process.
"We have had consequences for over two years, perhaps for something that could be addressed within a very sincere and much more intense conversation, between us and the EU. So it is a lesson that Kosovo must take in relation to the European Union. But also an understanding of a delicate system which consists of many voices and many states, and not all of them are in our favor at certain moments, so that increased care is needed in these relations," said Hoxha.
Welcoming the announcement from Von der Leyen – after saying that there was a risk of losing over 200 million euros – Besar Gërgi from the Institute for Legal and Political Studies stressed that Kosovo must now work on the next steps.
"With good implementation, Kosovo can benefit from up to 206 million euros from IPA funds and it is extremely important that the Government works as hard as possible in this regard. Also, it is very important that we no longer have this obstacle of European Union measures, any future government that emerges from the December 28 elections should push forward Kosovo's application for membership in the European Union," said Gërgi.
On December 16, the EU Director-General for Enlargement, Gert Jan Koopman, announced to the acting Government the news of the "further lifting of some of the measures", namely the unblocking of four projects worth 34.6 million euros. /Tv Dukagjini/
