Afghan troops fire in the air and at civilians
Afghan special forces opened fire to prevent crowds from entering Kabul airport. Eyewitness video shows Afghan troops firing into the air and at civilians, including children, to disperse those outside Hamid Karzai International Airport.
So far 600 members of the Afghan security forces have helped US troops secure Kabul airport, the scene of chaotic evacuation efforts, even as Afghanistan's army and government have disintegrated. Army Maj. Gen. William Taylor, with the US Army's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Afghan national security forces were at the airport "assisting us with that security."
Asked whether these Afghan security personnel would also be evacuated from Afghanistan, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said it was up to them to decide.
About 12,000 foreigners and Afghans working for embassies and international aid groups have been evacuated from Kabul airport since Taliban insurgents took Kabul.
At least 12 people have been killed in and around the airport since Sunday, NATO officials said.
