Machinists' strike hits the German railway

There is no compromise between the unions and the railway bosses

It was another black day for German railways with trains standing still on the tracks due to a strike by train drivers. Recent negotiations between the unions that had proposed an additional financial bonus for the time of the pandemic and senior executives of the federal railway Deutsche Bahn have failed. The leaders of the train drivers' union say they want higher wages and not bonuses. They said they are going on strike in order to get a new offer and for the employers to understand that they cannot stand this situation.

The German railway company Deutsche Bahn has asked its customers to postpone if possible their planned journeys especially on long distances as numerous train cancellations are expected.

Train passengers from Berlin to Frankfurt had to wait hopelessly for five hours at the station.

A spokesman for the German railways called this strike even more useless than the one held two weeks ago. He accused the union of only seeking a political war, without finding a solution at the negotiating table.

For their part, the unionists responded that they were ready to negotiate, but for a decent financial offer. German railway unions are demanding a 3.2% wage increase and one "bonus for coping with the coronavirus situation" in the amount of 600 Euros.

The German train operator "Deutsche Bahn" has rejected the demands of the workers. The company has lost billions since the start of the pandemic as well as from recent floods that destroyed or damaged many railroad tracks.
