The Taliban use tear gas to disperse the protests
Taliban militants have used tear gas and fired gunshots at dozens of Afghan women in Kabul who have protested for equal rights. The demonstrations began peacefully with a number of women laying a wreath outside the Ministry of Defense in honor of Afghan soldiers who lost their lives fighting the Taliban.
Social media footage showed members of the Taliban firing guns into the air to disperse the crowds. The Taliban have repeatedly promised to support women's rights since taking power last month.
But many Afghans and internationals are deeply skeptical, since they have already broken their promises. Many women fear a return to a similar situation between 1996 and 2001. Women were forced to cover their faces and received harsh punishments for minor infractions.
The Taliban have promised an inclusive government and a more moderate form of Islamic rule.
