Google is being sued by 37 US states over the policies of its app, Google Play. The lawsuit alleges that the tech giant used monopoly leverage to generate huge profits from in-app purchases. It also states that Google has bought its opponents.
Google disputes this and says that there are rival app stores and that the latter can also be downloaded directly from the developers' websites.
The list of 37 states includes New York, Tennessee, North Carolina and Washington. The lawsuit criticizes the commission that Google receives from purchases on Google Play, which goes up to 30%. In 2020, the company's gross profits from Google Play alone were about 36.8 billion dollars, according to "Statista", while Apple's chief executive, Tim Cook, has stated that he does not know how much profit the App Store brings to the company as a single unit.
Google also says that 97% of its developers don't pay service taxes because they don't sell digital products within their apps.
"Google Play is not a fair game. It must stop using monopoly power, hyper-dominant market position and billions added to it by small companies, competitors and consumers beyond what it has to pay", said one of the lawyers in a statement./tvklan.al
