Italy's Supreme Court finally acquits Salvini of charges in the "Open Arms" case

The Italian Supreme Court has issued a final decision acquitting League leader and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini of charges in the Open Arms case.

Salvini was accused of abuse of office and deprivation of liberty of 147 migrants aboard a Spanish NGO ship, Open Arms, when in August 2019, as interior minister, he did not allow them to disembark for days.

A year ago, Matteo Salvini was acquitted of charges by a Palermo court, which ruled that he had not committed a crime. Today, the country's top judges rejected an appeal by Sicilian prosecutors.

"Five years on trial: protecting borders is not a crime," the League secretary wrote in a post.
