By unanimous decision of the General Assembly of the Association of Local Self-Government Units (ZELS), the Mayor of Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, was re-elected as the President of ZELS.
As his cabinet says, the re-election is a confirmation of the work done so far and the vision for further strengthening local self-government, advancing decentralization processes, and deepening cooperation with the central government.
"I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members of the ZELS Board of Directors for the trust they have shown, together with my colleagues, in the two new vice-presidents, Izet Mexhiti and Goran Gerasimovski. I am convinced that we have a successful mandate ahead of us that will leave an important mark in advancing local self-government and deepening decentralization."
"I base this optimism on several main reasons. First, twenty years have passed since the beginning of the decentralization process, a period in which local governance has matured and a clear vision for the necessary reforms has been built. Second, in this mandate we have considerable human potential and experience, more than half of the mayors have at least one mandate behind them, and among them there are colleagues with long-term continuity."
"Thirdly, the experience of the energy crisis has shown that when we are united within ZELS we can find solutions and face the most difficult challenges," said Gjorgjievski.
